송지은 {Song Jieun} - 회상 III {Reminiscence III}
Immortal Song 2 Ep. 3

The full version of Jieun’s performance of 회상 III from the 3rd episode of Immortal Song 2.

Biases aside, apart from Yehsung’s 사랑할수록, I think this performance was the clear winner. Boohwal’s songs really revolve around the emotion driving the story of the lyrics and Jieun’s performance was the best in really telling the song and not just singing it. Many of the other performances were great vocally, of course, but completely missed the point of the song. (I understand that they want to do something new with the song, but Boohwal kept on reminding them in the first talking bit in Episode 2 that Boohwal’s songs are all about the story and they needed to at least have made editing choices that made some sense with the story they were trying to tell)

One thing Jieun’s performance had over Yehsung’s is that Yehsung’s performance didn’t really do anything new to the original song. Jieun’s editing was positively brilliant - Even Boohwal was impressed and said that the idea conveyed by the lyrics of ‘Never Ending Story’ edited into the end was so incredible that it raised goosebumps and that it was so good they would want to use it themselves. The image it brought up was so poetic and so wistful and guh, if you don’t understand Korean, I guess it’s hard to relay, but it was beautiful. Also, I want to make note of Boohwal’s comments for Jieun - Kim Taewon gave her advice to think about when she continues to do music. Kim Taewon wasn’t talking to her about being an idol; he was telling her to continue to do music and he was giving her help on becoming a better musician, and I think that’s the highest praise he gave to any of the singers on the show. And if you’re not familiar with Kim Taewon, he’s basically a god of music. Just sayin’.

The one thing is that I don’t know what the backup chorus was doing because they were just not blending well at all. It was jarring and ruined the feeling of the song. Also there were times that Jieun sounded a bit thin (her voice seems to be doing that more lately - perhaps because the songs Secret has been promoting don’t allow for her to use her voice fully) but it worked for her in terms of adding to the feeling of the song.

But this was a beautiful performance.

Immortal Song 2011.08.06 Thoughts

Overall, fun performances this time around, mostly because it took me back to all of the older Kpop songs that I love.

Hyorin - Hyorin seemed so…awkward in this performance. She was completely overshadowed by DJ DOC and well, quite frankly, Hyorin doesn’t know how to share a stage. Hyorin shines brightest when she has the spotlight all to herself or at least when she can dominate the other people so that it’s basically just her. I wasn’t even sure if she was having fun in this performance. This one sadly fell flat for me.

Huh Gak - First of all, Huh Gak is so cute. I’m a bit confused as I would never categorize him as an idol, but okay, whatever. I could’ve done without the rap, as it just seemed like Huh Gak was softly speaking to me, haha. When Huh Gak actually began to get started really singing, it was great. It was too bad that it took a while to get to that point. Not an incredible performance, but nice.

Jiyoon - Good choice for Jiyoon. Jiyoon’s voice tone is a bit…aggressive? I feel like her voice is much better suited for songs in which she can throw her voice at you. And Jiyoon is very good at being fierce while softness doesn’t work as well. I appreciated how there was clearly a lot of effort put into designing this performance, with the dancing and the lighting and everything.

Kyuhyun - OMG, Kyuhyun’s foreign fanboys. I really really enjoyed this performance - but then again, it could easily be a product of bias since I ADORE Kyuhyun’s and Sohn Hoyoung’s voices and I was also already familiar with this song (I can’t believe it’s from 11 years ago). But I really enjoyed how they played off each other and they really did do something new with the song. There were a few moments where it was a wee bit awkward, but for the most part, this was balanced and fun.

Jay - Jay looked so concerned throughout the performance. I mean, he tends to always look that way during performances; the effort he’s putting in is always very clearly written on his face. Which is on the one hand, good to see that he works so hard, but on the other hand, it makes me as an audience member uncomfortable as it gets me worried. After Heejun got Jay laughing, it got a bit better, but before that, the only time Jay seemed to genuinely just be enjoying the performance was when he was dancing. But it was a fun performance and cute in like an “Aww, Fail!Cuteness” kind of way. And I’ve never been a huge stan of Jay’s voice or anything, but there were some really nice moments in this performance.

G.O. - Kan Miyeon has always been one of my biases in Baby V.O.X. and I’ve always loved ‘Killer’ so I was looking forward to this. As soon as the accordion starting playing, I was intruiged. I liked the arrangement from the beginning, but G.O. was totally overpowered by Miyeon whenever they sang the chorus together - it wasn’t in the right key for G.O. and he should’ve harmonized instead. And aww, they tried with the dance.

Immortal Song Ep. 8 Thoughts

I hadn’t written up my thoughts on the last few eps of Immortal Song, but someone on Omona mentioned that they were waiting for my comment (which made me so pleased!) so I ended up writing this review instead of studying. Woot!

Junsu - 잠깐만 {Hold On A Second}
2011.07.16 Immortal Song 2

Since my other OTP is no longer on the show (Yoseob & Jieun, I’m looking at you), I have now directed my attention to a new OTP of Junsu and Hyorin. Last week, Junsu was impressed with Hyorin’s ability to take off her clothes, and this week, Hyorin expresses outrage at Junsu pretending to make the moves on another girl.

See 2:21 for reference. Junsu acts out kissing the backdancer, and Hyorin responds, “What is this??!!?” and then as her shrieks escalate, “Oh~ You can’t do this!!!!”

Yup.

Immortal Song 2 - Episode 5
Oh man, guys, I ship it.
He said, “Wow, this girl’s really good at taking off her clothes.”
LITERALLY.
Now let’s have them both stay on the show at the same time long enough to satisfy my shippingness unlike my other OTP…I’m looking at you, Yoseob and Jieun!
